I spend most of my time reading and writing academic philosophy. Below are the writing projects I am working on right now.
It has been recently argued that beliefs don’t help to explain simplified reasoning partly because beliefs are not voluntary. This argument is initially attractive, but I argue it rests on a restrictive model of how simplified reasoning and doxastic agency relate. The core of that model is a principle according to which controlling the formation of doxastic states is necessary for the kind of control exercised in simplified reasoning. By rejecting the underlying principle, we pave the way for a more sophisticated model, on which both doxastic control and automaticity have a place.
